Former President John Dramani Mahama has said his party will abolish red-gold-green traffic light Double-Track free SHS policy when they are voted back into power in 2020.
He believes the free SHS policy is not well planned and will be an exercise in futility as its directly affecting quality secondary education in the country.
The Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration recently adopted the double-tracking system to accommodate the increasing number of students in public schools under the Free SHS policy which was introduced in September 2017.
Currently about 362,118 first-year students in public SHSs in the country are benefiting from the policy, with 117,692 of them being day students and 244,426 as boarders.
Mr Mahama made these comments while addressing delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Drobonso in the Sekyere Afram Plains Constituency as part of his flagbearership campaign tour of the Ashanti Region.
He was surprised as to why government under the free SHS programme, will allow students to be in class for only 41 days adding that students might find it difficult to understand even a topic as tutors will not have the the luxury of time explain everything to these students.
Mr Mahama maintained that the Free SHS policy is a constitutional requirement but it is wise to implement it properly.
He then asserted that when voted into power, his administration will see to it how best the programme can be redesigned to give secondary school students the afforded time to study their books for better understanding.
He promised to build new dormitories, additional classroom blocks and also complete all the 200 Community Day Secondary School buildings as part of measures to reverse the double track system.
