KNUST reopens on Friday November 16, new Council inaugurated

Students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science of Technology (KNUST) will return to campus on Friday, November 16, 2018, and academic work will start on Monday, otecfmghana.com has learnt.

The school was closed down on October 22 this year following a demonstration by the students that destroyed several personal and school properties.

The reopening came after a new Governing Council for the school was constituted and inaugurated by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on Tuesday, November 13.

The Governing Council is made up of 15 members, four of which are government representatives.

A representative from the government chairs the council.

Nana Effah Apenteng, a retired diplomat and Omanhene of Bompata traditional Area and Hilda Hagar Ampadu, public health specialist, were members of the interim council set up by the government and they have been maintained on the new council.

The same representatives from the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Prof E.K. Fokuo; the Tertiary Education Workers Union (TEWU), Mr Charles Arthur; and the Students Representative Council (SRC), Kevin Sah, will be on the new council.

Also sworn in were Stephen Anoff Amoaning-Yankson, President of the Ghana Institute of Engineers and Alex Quaynor, a private legal practitioner.

The previous KNUST governing council was dissolved after management-student tensions culminated in violent protests and the school was shut down.
