President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said despite his plea to Fomena MP Andrew Amoako Asiamah against going independent in the upcoming 7 December 2020 polls, the lawmaker remained adamant.
The president has, thus, urged the electorate in the constituency to vote for governing New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate instead of the incumbent MP.
President Akufo-Addo made the appeal when he opened a 450-bed boys’ dormitory block at the Fomena T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School in the Ashanti Region.
The president said Mr Amoako Asiamah’s decision to contest the seat as an independent candidate will not help to bring significant development to the area as an independent candidate.
“You have seen that the independent candidate will not help Fomena, it won’t help Adansi. When it happens that way; it means, in parliament, you won’t have anyone who can negotiate with the government on your behalf, I’m glad you mentioned it”, the president said.
He also revealed that he had attempted to dissuade the MP from going solo but to no avail.
“But I don’t understand him. When I heard he wanted to contest as an independent candidate, three months ago, I called him [Mr Andrew Amoako Asiamah]. He came to me at the Jubilee House and I told him what I had heard. I pleaded with him that being an independent candidate won’t help him because a house that is completely dominated by party candidates, what can you do there. I pleaded with him to put all differences aside till after the elections,” President Akufo-Addo noted.
He explained, however, that his plea fell on deaf ears and, thus, appealed to the people to vote for the NPP’s candidate instead.
Meanwhile, Chiefs in the Adanse Traditional area have disclosed that they have disown the Former Member of Parliament for Fomena Constituency Lawyer Andrew Amoako Asiamah for running as independent parliamentary candidate in the area
The Paramount Chief of Adanse Traditional Council Opagyakotwere Bonsra Afriyie addressing President Akuffo Addo and his entourage at Fomena, followed by OTEC News Kwame Agyenim Boateng said Lawyer Andrew Amoako Asiama has failed to honor an invitation by chiefs in the area to find out why he’s contesting as independent candidate
He added that the former Legislator has shown gross disrespect to chiefs and residents of Adanse hence their decision to disown him
Mr. Amoako Asiamah who was defeated in the New Patriotic party’s parliamentary primaries earlier in the year is contesting the upcoming elections as an independent candidate contrary to the NPP’s constitution.

He noted that he had met with Lawyer Andrew Asiamah on his decision to contest as an independent candidate to settle any differences.
