65% of our natural wetlands have been lost due to human activities
The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah has revealed that 65 percent of our natural wetlands have been lost as a result of human activities.
According to the minister, the practice of recovering land through the filling of wetlands and the draining of wetlands for other uses is drastically reducing the storage capacity of water bodies and impacting water quality.
Speaking on behalf of the sector Minister, Mr. Donna Tay, Director of Water, Ministry, of Sanitation and Water Resources at the launch and opening ceremony of a 3-day workshop on Nature Base Solutions Capacity Building and Development of National and Basin Wide Projects.
“The environmental damage together with climate change is driving the water-related crisis in the country.The floods and water pollution are all made worse by degraded vegetation, soil, rivers, and lakes.”
He, therefore, encouraged all stakeholders to combine the knowledge that they will acquire at the 3 day training to provide productive ideas that will manifest into bankable projects towards effective sustainable nature-based solutions to water security and climate change.
The executive Secretary of water resources commission, Mr. Ben Yaw Ampomah said there is the need to encourage greater understanding to take pragmatic actions towards the use, protection, and conservation of our water and natural resources.
This to him, we must improve water resources management at all levels from policy to revolutions in engineering, service providers, policymakers, civil societies, and the general public.
He added that the 3 day workshop offers the opportunity to explore and implement database solutions to myriad issues confronting the Ocean in Ghana.
