Fight against galamsey has not yielded good results – Akuffu Addo admits
President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo
The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has admitted the fight against illegal mining popularly known as galamsey has not yielded good results.
According to him, the fight on illegal mining has now become an albatross on the nation that needs urgent pragmatic steps to win.
President Akuffo Addo said this during a meeting with the National House of Chiefs at Manhyia to discuss the menace of illegal mining in Ghana on Wednesday October 5, 2022.
The meeting which was necessitated by the resurgence in galamsey activities was to seek support from traditional leaders to help halt illegal mining.
President Akuffo Addo while addressing the chiefs urged the public embrace the war against galamsey devoid of partisan politics and protect the country’s dwindling environment.
“Ghana’s future is in a limbo with a huge chunk of its environment under-siege from boisterous young men and women who are digging every inch of space in mineral rich areas of Ghana in search of gold, diamond etc”.
“They have polluted many rivers, cut down many trees, destroyed many farms all in search of gold”
Their activities are threatening the very survival of the country, leaving the country no choice but to come together irrespective of our political orientation and fight the problem.
He called on all the traditional leaders to make galamsey fight a national agenda in order to rally all behind the government in its quest to bring finality to the problem.
For his part, the President of the National House of Chiefs Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi pledged their full support to the government to halt galamsey activities.
We as traditional leaders are very much appalled by the way galamsey is destroying our environment, and we are solidly behind you”
“We however ask you to apply appropriate sanctions to any person or persons engaging any form of illegal mining”
