MTN presents scholarships to 100 beneficiaries

50 persons from the northern sector out of an intended 100 from across the country have been awarded scholarship packages from MTN Bright Scholarships Reloaded edition.

This reloaded edition promised to reward 100 needy but brilliant persons who had gained admission to public universities a package to make their education less of a burden.

Speaking to the media after an event at the Law faculty of KNUST to publicly award the beneficiaries, Mr Samuel Koranteng, Board Member of MTN Foundation said his outfit decided to as part of its 25th anniversary celebration give scholarships to support 100 needy students.

This, he noted was aside its much publicized Bright Scholarship Awards MTN does annually to provide 300 persons with scholarships.

‘’The foundation received 1,600 applications from all the 16 regions of Ghana and this morning 50 of the 100 awardees or beneficiaries selected through a rigorous process by a panel will receive their packages to further their education’’,  the Board Member disclosed.

 DETAILS:

Mr Koranteng said that 50 persons from the northern sector were receiving theirs today with the other batch to receive theirs at the southern sector.

The package, the Board Member disclosed, comprised tuition, accommodation, a laptop computer each and a stipend of GHC 1,150.00 each semester.

Mr Koranteng said the 100 beneficiaries were selected across the 16 regions of Ghana with 62 males, 38 females and three visually impaired persons making up for the breakdown.

‘’Special attention is given to students pursuing courses in Science, Mathematics, ICT and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and will also cater for physically challenged persons interested in pursuing ICT and computer science courses”, the MTN Board Member stated.

APPRECIATION:

Madam Akua Agyeiwaah, a mother of a beneficiary filled with delight commended MTN for the gesture.

She noted that her ward lost the father some years ago and the loss has had a toll on her since she now struggles to make money from her tomato business which has almost collapsed due to her inability to find a proper place to sell.

The MTN scholarship, she noted, was therefore a godsent gesture to enable her ward further her education which seemed over after completing SHS.

”I am grateful to MTN for providing my ward a lifeline to enable her to continue her education at the university and I know this would turn out good for my family in the long run”, Madam Agyeiwaa stated.

 BACKGROUND:

The Board Member said since the launch of the Bright Scholarship Awards in 2007, MTN had spent a whopping 15 million dollars into education, social empowerment and healthcare which are the three pillars of the Foundation.
