Junior staff at New Kejetia Market on strike over meagre salary

Over 50 Junior Staff at the New Kejetia Market in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti Region have declared a sit-down strike as part of processes to demand salary increment.

The group is demanding the Kumasi City Market Limited, managers of the market to implement a salary structure that has already been agreed between the two parties.

Leadership of the junior staff noted that work has come to a standstill until they receive a response to the effect that, their demands for salary adjustment have been heeded to.

According to them, aside from receiving meager salaries for months, several other pertinent concerns including insurance packages that have been raised over the years have not been addressed by management of the facility.

A visit to the market by OTEC News’ Kwame Agyenim Boateng,on Wednesday December 7,2022, showed that indeed securities , cleaners and other staff members have refused to work.

A leading member of the group, Kofi Yeboah disclosed that some of their members receive a little over GH¢ 400 monthly salary which according to him, is below board considering the current economic situation in the country.

He added that implementing the salary structure will not only increase their salaries but will also provide them additional benefits including insurance packages.

Kofi Yeboah emphasized that; nothing will change their minds until they receive what they are demanding from the Kumasi City Market Limited, managers of the facility.

“The reality is that workers are currently at work but are not working because we are yet to receive a result that our salaries have been increased.
