Unknown group clashes with Police at Kawukudi during anti-galamsey protest
Chaos erupted when an entourage alleged to be that of the Chief Imam forced their way through a police barricade at the 37-bound section of the Kawukudi intersection in Accra.
The police had blocked the 37-bound section of the Kawukudi intersection while the #StopGalamseyNow protesters made a brief stop on their way to the Kanda highway.
However, some members of the entourage clashed with the police officers and removed the barricades.
The Chief Imam was allegedly on his way from the National Mosque to his residence.
Meanwhile, the second day of the Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey protest began with an energetic start, as demonstrators gathered for a ‘morale’ session before marching through the streets of Accra to demand decisive action against illegal mining activities.
Organised by the pressure group Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey, the protest seeks to highlight the severe environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
Young participants filled the atmosphere with chants, songs, and drumming, energizing the crowd before setting off on the march. The demonstrators are expected to present a petition to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources today, Friday, October 4.
