PUSAG Condemns Obuasi Shooting, Calls for Justice and Reform
Ibrahim Issah, PUSAG President
The Private Universities Students Association of Ghana (PUSAG) has strongly condemned the recent killing of civilians by personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) at the AngloGold Ashanti mines in Obuasi.
In a press statement released on Saturday, January 20, 2025, and signed by the National President, H.E. Ibrahim Issah, PUSAG expressed its shock and dismay at the tragic incident, describing it as both “shocking and deeply disheartening.”
The statement noted that the GAF’s justification of their actions as self-defense raises significant questions about adherence to internationally accepted protocols for handling unarmed civilians.
Concerns Raised
H.E. Ibrahim Issah questioned, “Are we to believe that our armed forces, trained in modern methods and techniques and equipped with specialized skills, lack the ability to disarm civilians without resorting to lethal force?”
PUSAG emphasized that in nations where human life is prioritized, the use of non-lethal weapons and de-escalation tactics has proven effective in maintaining law and order while avoiding unnecessary casualties.
The association highlighted that this incident undermines Ghana’s reputation as a nation with a respected and professional military.
Demands for Accountability
The statement lauded the swift directive by H.E. John Dramani Mahama for an investigation but further called for an independent and bipartisan probe into the events.
“The findings must be made public, and any individuals found culpable, regardless of rank or status, must be brought to justice to prevent future occurrences,” PUSAG stressed.
Solidarity and Appeal for Restraint
PUSAG extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and stood in solidarity with the people of Obuasi. It urged the youth to exercise restraint and avoid retaliatory actions as investigations unfold.
“This tragedy is a stark reminder of the need to prioritize the safety and dignity of all citizens, especially the youth, who represent the future of this nation,” H.E. Ibrahim Issah stated.
Call to Action
The statement concluded with a call for the government to use this incident as a turning point to ensure the sanctity of human life and respect for the rights of all citizens in Ghana.
