Police, National Security arrest three over deadly MoMo attacks in Ashanti Region

Security agencies have arrested three suspects in connection with the spate of Mobile Money (MoMo) vendor murders in the Ashanti Region.

The arrests, made through a coordinated effort between National Security and the Ghana Police Service, took place in Bawku and Accra, according to a statement shared on Monday (24 March), by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene.

Authorities have yet to release the identities of the arrested suspects, but police sources confirmed to Asaase News that they are assisting with investigations.

The police have also intensified operations in known crime hotspots to curb the rise in MoMo-related robberies.

New wave

The recent attacks on MoMo vendors in the region have raised public alarm, with multiple reports of armed robberies leading to fatal outcomes. Several vendors have been targeted in different locations, with criminals making away with cash and valuables.

Last month, a 27-year-old MoMo vendor, Patricia Nimako, was shot dead at Krofrom, with her attackers escaping with GH¢10,000 and mobile phones.

Additionally, another vendor was murdered at Amansie Asaman under similar circumstances.

The police are also searching for attackers of a 27-year-old MoMo vendor who was robbed and killed at Soldier-Line in the Kwadaso Municipality.

The Ashanti Regional Minister praised the swift efforts of security forces in tracking down the suspects and assured residents that further investigations are underway. He also urged MoMo operators to remain vigilant and adopt safety measures to protect themselves against such attacks.

Security strategies

To further safeguard vendors, the Ashanti Regional Security Council (AREGSEC) will organize a safety workshop to educate MoMo operators on precautionary measures for their business.

Dr. Amoakohene, in a Facebook post, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling the issue and restoring confidence in the mobile money trade.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the police as efforts continue to bring perpetrators to justice.
