“We haven’t given up on you” – Mahama tells Black Stars

President John Dramani Mahama has encouraged the Black Stars players to sacrifice everything and qualify the nation to the next World Cup in 2026.

The President made the comments when visited the Black Stars’ training session at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday, March 19, 2024.

His presence and words of encouragement came at a pivotal moment as the team prepares for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars, once a powerhouse in African football, have faced a challenging period, marked by their failure to qualify for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and early exits in recent tournaments.

Addressing the team, Mahama acknowledged these struggles but remained steadfast in his belief that the squad could reclaim its former glory.

“We didn’t qualify for AFCON. But even when we did, we crashed out very early the last time. And so, we haven’t given up on you,” Mahama assured the players.

The president emphasised that the revival of the Black Stars depends on a collective effort from the players, technical staff, and management committee.

“We still believe that the Black Stars can find its glory again. And it’s dependent on you, the technical team, and the management committee,” he stressed, calling for unity and commitment.

Mahama also reminded the players of the immense support they enjoy from Ghanaians, urging them to match that passion with dedication on the field.

“The goals will come from these feet that are right here. And so, it takes sacrifice. It takes strength. We all like to watch you when you play for your clubs, and we expect that you bring some of that dedication to the national team,” he said.

The Black Stars are set to face Chad on March 21 at the Accra Sports Stadium before traveling to Morocco for their match against Madagascar on March 24.

These fixtures are critical in Ghana’s quest to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the team is leaving no stone unturned in their preparations.
