A/R: NDC executives accuse military officers of targeting their supporters

Executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region have accused some military officers in the region of deliberately targeting their members following the death of a 36-year-old at Nyinahin in the Atwima Mponua District.

The deceased, Akwasi Lala, popularly known as Kushivi, died after he was allegedly shot by some military officers during a confrontation when he was seen dressed in a military camouflage uniform.

The incident happened on Thursday, April 24, when a group of mourners were on their way to bury a friend at the cemetery when the military officers in a truck stopped to confront the deceased after they spotted him in the attire.

Three other mourners sustained gunshot wounds when the officers fired further shots to avert an attack from the mourners.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command, as part of its probe into the incident, has written to the Military High Command to present the officers to assist in investigations.

But NDC leadership in the Ashanti Region is accusing the military of targeting its members, citing the incident at Obuasi, where eight miners died after military officers opened fire on them on the concession of Anglogold Ashanti.

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, Augustus Nana Kwesi Andrews, who led some executives to console the bereaved family, appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.

“It’s very sad. We condemn what has happened. They had to arrest him and hand him over to the police, but to open fire on a human being is very uncalled for. We’re appealing to President Mahama, this is not the first time, it happened in Obuasi, they killed nine of our men. Up till now, we haven’t heard anything.

“This is not politics, we’re appealing to President Mahama that this has to be investigated and let the deceased family be happy. What we need is justice; it’s becoming unbecoming. This guy was an NDC, the Obuasi guys too were NDC people, I didn’t know if they were being political,” he said.
