Kumasi Mayor’s decongestion move premature – Traders

Traders in Kumasi’s Central Business District believe the new Mayor, Richard Ofori Agyeman, popularly known as King Zuba, has made a good decision in trying to decongest the city, but it’s premature.

They argue that asking them to vacate pavements without providing an alternative space to work is unfair, especially considering the Mayor has given them until today, Wednesday, April 15, 2025, to comply.

The traders maintain that while the move might clear pedestrians, it would leave hundreds without livelihoods.

They are calling for stakeholder engagement ahead of any decongestion exercise. “We want to meet the mayor; he has to listen to our concerns before taking such decisions,” a second-hand cloth dealer said.

A footwear trader expressed similar concerns, saying, “The Mayor should put himself in our shoes, and he will know it’s not our wish to be on the streets, at the mercy of the scorching sun.

All we’re asking for is a good place to work.” Another trader cried out.

The traders believe the Mayor’s directive, aimed at restoring order and easing pedestrian movement would be more effective if implemented with their concerns in mind.
