An aide to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says the former Vice President has successfully arranged all the required sureties for the release of embattled Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini confirmed on Friday that the necessary documentation has been submitted and is now subject to verification by the relevant authorities.
“If the verification of the sureties is completed today, the Chairman will be released,” Khomeini stated in a post on Facebook.
Chairman Wontumi was granted bail earlier this week to the tune of GH¢50 million with two sureties to be justified — a condition that sparked public and political outcry, particularly from his party’s leadership and minority MPs in Parliament.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) minority has described the bail conditions as excessive and politically motivated. Protests erupted outside the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) earlier this week, with lawmakers staging sit-ins demanding Wontumi’s immediate release.
Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney General, Dr Justice Srem Sai, stated via social media that Wontumi is under investigation for multiple criminal offences, including fraud, money laundering, and suspected links to international organised crime.
The legal team representing Wontumi has firmly denied all allegations, calling the claims “politically driven” and a violation of his fundamental human rights.
Enoch Afoakwah, one of Wontumi’s lawyers, criticised the Deputy AG’s comments as “partisan and prejudicial,” adding that the ongoing legal process must be respected.
