Flooding in Ashanti Region: NADMO commences desilting of 16 major drains ahead of rain season

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has begun its quest to desilt some 17 major drains in the Ashanti Region.

The exercise which is expected to last 12 days, commenced at the Aboabo River, near the Airport Roundabout, on Thursday, May 22, 2025.

Other areas, including the Pelele River at Aboabo, Asabi, and Anloga Junction, among others, are expected to be desilted as part of efforts to check perennial flooding in the region.

Research revealed that most major drains in the area are heavily choked with silt, debris, and waste, posing a significant flood risk.
The exercise aims to improve the drainage system and reduce the risk of flooding in Greater Kumasi.
In an interview with the press, the NADMO Regional Director, Alhaji Ibrahim, stated that the organization had obtained the necessary permits from the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Frank Amoakohene, who released an excavator to facilitate the desilting operation.
Alhaji Ibrahim emphasized that NADMO is committed to desilting major drains in Kumasi with the support of stakeholders.
He noted that the Aboabo Nsuo drain was particularly narrowed by debris, reducing the space available for water to flow, and that the exercise would help clear the silt and waste, improving the drain’s capacity.
