As the leadership of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) begins its journey to restructure the party and build a formidable force ahead of the 2028 elections, a leading member and former Majority Leader, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu is proposing several key amendments to the party’s Constitution.

The former Member of Parliament for the Suame constituency, who is celebrated for his role in the country’s democratic dispensation, is proposing some key amendments to the 185 clauses of the party’s Constitution which he believes will enhance the NPP’s internal restructuring and solidifies the base in preparation towards the 2028 general elections.

The leadership of the opposition party, following it’s National Executive Committee meeting held last month, agreed to make amendments to its Constitution and has invited proposals from members of the party for consideration.

Against this backdrop, Hon. Kyei Mensah Bonsu has comprehensively reviewed the party’s legal document and penned down some important points for deliberations by the Constitution Review Committee.

Amongst the key recommendations which have been cited, as the celebrated former Legislator prepares to hand it over to the leadership of the party, includes Alignment and Re-alignment, assigning clear responsibilities to party officers, amendment of the composition of the membership of the constituency executive committee, conduct and supervision of the selection of parliamentary candidates, including other important recommendations that is expected to strengthen the structure of the party and ensure inclusiveness.

For example, in one of the sections, the former Majority Leader proposes the creation of a new subclause 2: to read thus: “The National Council shall assist the National Annual Delegates Conference in the determination of the general policy of the Party and provide directions ,as may become necessary ,on critical national matter”

Again, Hon. Kyei Mensah makes a strong case for the involvement of the leadership of the party in the nomination and appointments of ministers and other appointee.

He notes in his recommendations “The National Executive Committee shall ,when the Party wins power, form a committee chaired by the National Chairman, that shall include the Leader of the Parliamentary Party, the Chief Whip of the Parliamentary Party, the Chairman of the Council of Elders, the General Secretary, the Women Organiser, 2 Regional Chairmen representing the northern and southern sections of the country and 3 other known and active members of the Party nominated by the President who shall consider and advise the President on ministerial and Deputy ministerial appointments, ambassadorial, chief executive positions and other relevant officers that the President sponsored by the Party shall make under the 1992 Constitution”.
