Gun-wielding officers seize NPP’s Alfred Kumi from home

The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has arrested Alfred Ababio Kumi, a former NPP parliamentary aspirant for Adenta.

The arrest on Friday (23 May) comes just days after “Adenta Kumi” –as he is affectionately called – petitioned President John Mahama to dissolve the committee probing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Details of his arrest remain unclear. However, Kumi’s mother Nana Ama Owusu confirmed on the Asaase Breakfast Show that her son was taken into custody around 6am.

“We saw about eight armed operatives arrived at the residence while he was taking his bath. They said they only wanted to speak with him, but ended up taking him away.

The officers broke into the building, damaging doors before gaining access”, she recounted adding that she is now preparing to visit the NIB office to locate her son.

No official reason has been given.

The development has sparked reactions from the rank and file of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), including its General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua.

“All patriots should rush to Adenta Kumi’s house. Over 20 CID and National Security officers are there to pick him up”, Kodua stated in a social media post.

Kumi had recently alleged that two members of the five-member committee were seen dining with a lawyer representing one of the petitioners—claims he said compromise the integrity of the proceedings.

The committee, chaired by Justice Gabriel Pwamang, began its hearings on 15 May behind closed doors. Kumi submitted his petition to the presidency on 19 May, urging swift action to protect the credibility of the constitutional process.
