Manhyia South MP calls for suspension of electricity tariff hike

Hon Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah Esq. MP for Manhyia South Constituency,

The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South Constituency, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah Esq., has requested the immediate suspension of the recent 14.75% electricity tariff hike, set to take effect from May 3, 2025.

In a letter to Dr. Shafic Syleman, Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), the MP cited the worsening power outages and argued that the tariff adjustment would be unjust, unfair, and unreasonable.

Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah stated that consumers should not pay more for electricity they do not consistently receive, contradicting the principle of value-for-service.

He urged the PURC to reconsider its position, citing Section 3(d) of Act 538, which mandates the Commission to protect the interests of consumers and providers of utility services.

The MP also expressed concerns about the Commission’s silence on the widespread power outages, questioning its regulatory responsiveness and transparency.

He emphasized that focusing solely on the financial sustainability of utility providers is not enough, especially when service quality has demonstrably declined.
