Politicized education system fueling indiscipline in Ghana schools – WiseUp CEO

The CEO of WiseUp Consult, Janet Adu Poku, has identified the politicization of secondary schools in Ghana as a significant factor contributing to the high rate of indiscipline among students.

Speaking on Otec FM’s “Nyansapo” morning show on Monday, she explained that the school system has broken down, giving students too much power and making teachers hesitant to discipline them.

Fear of political victimization

“The school system has broken down to the effect that students have now been given much ‘power’ and no teacher dares to discipline a student for wrongdoing,” Adu Poku stated.

“Headmasters are afraid to punish students for fear of being politically victimized,” she added.

Recent incidents

Adu Poku’s comments come after two recent incidents involving students in Ghanaian senior high schools.

A 16-year-old Form Two student of Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School was arrested for possessing a locally manufactured firearm without lawful authority.

In another incident, a second-year student of Bantama SDA SHS fired a small arm in class, nearly blinding a female student.

Call for action

To address the situation, Janet Adu Poku has called on the Ghana Education Service to empower headmasters to administer punishments to students who flout school rules.

“We need to give headmasters the authority to discipline students,” she emphasized.

“This will help restore order and discipline in our schools,” Janet Adu Poku said.
