Traders clash with transport operators over planned protest in Ashanti Region

Some traders in the Ashanti Region have clashed with commercial transport operators over their planned protest against them.
The traders believe the commercial drivers are being insensitive, knowing the hard conditions traders go through to make ends meet in the country.
Commercial transport operators across Ghana have threatened to withdraw their services over the growing menace of unauthorized roadside trading, which they say is severely disrupting the flow of traffic and affecting their livelihoods.
The protest, according to transport operators, will commence on Monday, May 19, 2025.
Citing Regulation 117 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180), the operators are calling on the authorities to take swift action or face industrial action.
Speaking to OTEC News on Sunday, May 18, 2025, ahead of the planned protest, some traders in the Kumasi Metropolis said they disagree with the transport operators on their position.
They noted they have been forced to work on pavements due to the non-availability of enough market space to host them.
This situation, they emphasized, is more like a national cancer that needs to be addressed, adding that the commercial transport operators have had their priorities wrong.
They called on authorities to rather focus on building markets and completing stalled market projects to help them get a good place to work.
