Ashanti Region: Two dead in multiple truck crash at Atwedie

Two people have died and three others rescued in a horrific chain of collisions involving multiple trucks at Atwedie in Ashanti Region, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

The incident, which occurred on Friday (30 May 2025), involved two separate accidents on the same stretch of road in the Asante Akim South Municipality.

In the first collision, a container truck with registration number WR 1679-Z is reported to have suffered brake failure before veering into the path of a Burkinabe-bound articulated truck loaded with cloth (registration 11 JN 2972).

Fire officials say the impact claimed the lives of the driver and his conductor in the container truck. Other victims were rushed to a nearby health facility by bystanders before GNFS personnel arrived.

While rescue operations were still underway, a second Burkinabe-bound truck (BF 2389 D 03), this time loaded with cashew seeds, also suffered brake failure at the same location and overturned.

Firefighters from the Ejisu and Juaso Fire Stations responded swiftly, breaking through the windscreen of the overturned vehicle to pull out three trapped occupants, who were later transported to the hospital for treatment.

Authorities say both the Ghana Police Service and other emergency partners helped secure the scene, while fire crews used foam concentrate to manage spilt fuel and oil to prevent a secondary hazard.

The cause of the brake failures is yet to be determined, but the GNFS has urged transport operators to ensure regular maintenance of long-haul vehicles.
