Kennedy Agyapong’s camp disappointed over NPP’s January 2026 Presidential Primary date

Lawyer Kwasi Kwarteng, spokesperson for New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Kennedy Agyapong, has expressed disappointment over the party’s decision to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NPP announced on Wednesday that the primaries to select the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections will take place on that date.

The decision, according to the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, was reached during the NEC meeting held on June 17, 2025, and later endorsed by the party’s National Council.

Concerns over party polls

However, speaking in an interview with Otec News on Wednesday, Mr. Kwarteng criticized the timing, arguing that the NEC should have prioritized conducting Regional and National Executive elections before the presidential primaries.

“We are disappointed in the decision. The right thing would have been to elect Regional and National Executives before the presidential primaries,” Kwarteng stressed, insisting that this order would have created a more transparent and organized environment for the flagbearer selection.

Kennedy Agyapong’s readiness

Despite these concerns, the spokesperson reaffirmed Kennedy Agyapong’s readiness to contest in the primaries.

“Hon. Kennedy Agyapong is always prepared for the battle, and we believe he will emerge victorious if the process is conducted with fairness and openness,” he stated.

Other contenders

Kennedy Agyapong is expected to face stiff competition from other prominent party figures, including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Education Minister Hon Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong.
