New Energy Levy won’t impact transport prices – Energy Expert Sampson Addai

Energy Expert, Sampson Addai

Energy Expert Sampson Addai has emphasized that the introduction of a new levy on petroleum products will not affect transport prices.

According to him, fuel prices are expected to go down marginally in the next pricing window, and so drivers will have no basis to increase transport fares.

Speaking to Dr. Cash on the Kumasi-based OTEC 102.9 FM’s afternoon political show Dwabrem on Wednesday, the energy expert emphasized that the ordinary consumer may not feel the impact of the levy due to the Cedi gains.

Cassiel Ato Forson, the Finance Minister, on Tuesday introduced the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Bill, 2025, to Parliament, proposing a significant increase in taxes on petroleum products.

The bill, submitted under a certificate of urgency, aims to raise funds to address an alleged energy sector’s substantial debt and procure essential fuels for thermal plants.

The Bill proposes to peg the levy at GH¢1 per liter of fuel, up from the current 20 pesewas per liter charge on petrol and diesel. According to Dr. Forson, the funds generated will be used to reduce the sector’s $3.1 billion debt and clear payment shortfalls.

Speaking on the impact of the Levy Mr Addai emphasized that, with the current strength of the Cedi, the Levy will not impact on food prices and transport fares
