Supervisor, fashion designer among 10 arrested for circulating BECE papers – WAEC

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed that ten people have been apprehended across Ghana for allegedly breaching examination regulations during the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (12 June) WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, disclosed that those picked up include one examination supervisor, six invigilators, a school administrator, and two civilians — a fashion designer and a student nurse.
“They had mobile phones on them, had taken snapshots of question papers, and circulated them on social media,” Kapi said.
According to WAEC, the non-candidates were found in possession of solved questions and photocopies intended for distribution.
“These persons were not related to the exams, and it is criminal for them to have any form of the question paper outside the exam hall,” Mr. Kapi added, noting that they had been handed over to the police for prosecution.
The arrests span five regions: one suspect from Greater Accra, one from Ashanti, five from Bono East, and two from Bono Region.
In a related development, some BECE candidates were also found with photocopied materials.
Kapi said WAEC had taken statements from those students, and “if it is found that indeed they took advantage of the material, we would cancel their papers.”
WAEC says it is working closely with security agencies to safeguard the integrity of the exams.
Over 600,000 candidates are sitting the BECE this year.
