‘Use your purchasing power to save furniture industry in Manhyia South Constituency’ – MP urges government

Hon Nana Agyei Baffour,Member of Parliament for Manhyia South

The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour, has called on the government to support the local furniture industry in his constituency by creating a ready market through its purchasing power.

According to the MP, the industry has suffered significantly due to the influx of imported furniture, leading to many local manufacturers going out of business.

Hon Nana Agyei Baffour was contributing to a statement made in parliament on Tuesday June 17, 2025 by Hon Steve Amoah, MP for Nhyiaeso on Entrepreneurship path in Ghana’s Basic Schools and Senior Secondary Schools curriculum.
He expressed frustration about the decline of furniture hubs in his constituency, attributing it to the lack of available market for locally made products.

The legal luminary MP emphasized the need for the government to support local entrepreneurs by utilizing its purchasing power to create demand for their products.

“Mr. Speaker, I believe that there should be training on entrepreneurship for students, but unless we create a market for them, their training will yield no fruits,” he said.

“Take my constituency, Manhyia South for example, we had dozens of local companies manufacturing furniture, but most of them are out of the market due to the importation of foreign furniture.”

“I strongly believe government can create ready market for local entrepreneurs with its purchasing power,” he added, highlighting the potential role of government support in promoting economic growth and development.
