Lawyer Barfour Awuah, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South
The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Lawyer Barfour Awuah, has called on the Ghana Police Service to demonstrate professionalism and independence during the upcoming Akwatia by-election.
Speaking to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) today, July 17, 2017, Lawyer Awuah emphasized the need for the security agencies to maintain law and order without bias or external influence.
According to him, incidents that marred the Ablekuma North election should not be repeated in Akwatia. He expressed concern over reports of intimidation and misconduct during the Ablekuma North polls, stressing that such acts undermine Ghana’s democratic credentials.
“I want the Ghana Police to exhibit control and independence in the upcoming Akwatia by-election because I don’t want what happened at Ablekuma North to repeat itself again,” Lawyer Barfour Awuah stated.
The Manhyia South MP added that peaceful and transparent elections are crucial for the country’s stability and growth. He urged all stakeholders, including political parties and supporters, to play their part in ensuring a free and fair electoral process.
Lawyer Awuah further noted that the police must not allow themselves to be manipulated by any political interest, and must deal firmly with any individual or group that attempts to disrupt the election.
He commended the Electoral Commission for its efforts so far in preparing for the by-election but insisted that security arrangements must be strengthened to guarantee the safety of voters and electoral officers.
He concluded by calling on the residents of Akwatia to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities, adding that democracy thrives when citizens actively protect the integrity of elections.
The Akwatia by-election has become necessary following the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament. Political parties are gearing up for what is expected to be a keenly contested poll.
