President John Dramani Mahama hosted a special luncheon at the Jubilee House, the seat of government, on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, to honour senior citizens in the country.
The event was held to recognise their invaluable contributions to the nation’s development as Ghana marked its 65th anniversary as a republic.
Ghana became a republic on July 1, 1960, transitioning from a constitutional monarchy with the British monarch as head of state to a fully sovereign nation with its own president.
This day is also celebrated as Senior Citizens’ Day, acknowledging the contributions of older Ghanaians to the country’s history and progress.
The luncheon was attended by Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, and the Chairman of the Council of State, Rt. Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho.
Almost all members of the Council of State were present, including the revered paramount chiefs and other traditional rulers on the council.
Beyond leading public officials, the event was graced by senior citizens who have achieved significant strides in various fields.
Among the notable attendees were Ghanaian highlife legend Daddy Lumba; renowned businessman and politician Paa Kwesi Nduom; the Despite brothers—Osei Kwame Despite and Ernest Ofori Sarpong—boxing legend Azumah Nelson; music icon Rocky Dawuni, and Samia Nkrumah, a daughter of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
During the event, President Mahama emphasised the importance of honouring senior citizens, stating, “The dignity of older people is the dignity of our nation and we must protect it. The soul of any nation can be seen in how it treats its children and its senior citizens.”
He added that Ghana cannot thrive unless every citizen lives in dignity and can aspire to a better future.
