Nursing trainees receive 6-month allowance as President Mahama delivers on his promise

The Ministry of Health has confirmed the disbursement of GHS 462 million to nursing trainees across the country, delivering on a key campaign promise by President John Dramani Mahama.

The allowance, covering a six-month period, will benefit over 120,000 students enrolled in Nurses Training Colleges nationwide. Disbursement of the funds began today, with payments expected to continue through to next Friday.

According to a statement signed by Tony Goodman, Deputy Director and Spokesperson for the Ministry, the move underscores the government’s commitment to supporting the welfare of future healthcare professionals and ensuring continuity in the delivery of quality healthcare education.

“This development marks a significant milestone in enhancing the motivation of nursing trainees and strengthening the overall human resource base of the health sector,” the statement said.

President Mahama had pledged to restore and consistently pay trainee allowances during the recent electioneering campaign—a promise that now sees concrete fulfillment.

The Ministry of Health expressed gratitude to President Mahama for his swift action and to all stakeholders involved in ensuring the timely release and smooth distribution of the funds.

The Ministry further pledged to continue close collaboration with nursing institutions to maintain high standards of training and to support policies that ensure a resilient and responsive healthcare system.

The payment comes at a time when Ghana’s health sector is under increasing pressure to expand its workforce and improve service delivery, especially in underserved areas.
