Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has declared himself the most prepared candidate to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections, after officially filing his nomination forms to contest the party’s flagbearer slot.
Dr. Bawumia, accompanied by his wife Samira and a large crowd of supporters, submitted his forms at the party’s headquarters in Accra on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
The event turned into a festive show of strength, with supporters in NPP colours dancing to brass band music and chanting his name.
Addressing the charged gathering, Dr. Bawumia said his candidacy represents more than just a routine step in the flagbearer race but a defining choice for the NPP’s future.
He stressed that his experience as Vice President and his track record of delivering results make him uniquely positioned to secure victory in 2028 and provide effective governance from 2029.
“I demonstrate my strength by getting results, not by making noise or by insults or bragging about money. The combined effect of how well Bawumia is Known today and my experience as VP make me the most prepared person for the NPP’s quest for the 2028 election and Governance in 2029,” Dr. Bawumia said.
He described the upcoming January 31, 2026, flagbearer election as not only a contest for leadership but a battle for the “soul of the NPP.”
According to him, the choice delegates make will determine whether the party continues to uphold its founding values or drifts into deeper divisions.
“This election is an election not only for flagbearer of our party but an election for the soul of this party. The choice we make on Jan 31st will determine whether or not this party will hold on to the values that make us great or become a new party focused on deepening the chasm between the rich and the poor,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia is set to face competition from other aspirants, including former General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong.
