Adansi Asokwa: Residents of Asilevikrom lament severe health risks amid water crisis
Residents of Asilevikrom in the Adansi Asokwa constituency of the Ashanti Region have been lamenting over a worsening water crisis that is putting their lives at serious risk.
Speaking to OTEC FM reporter, Elizabeth Gyamfuaa Fosu, the residents revealed that the lack of access to clean and safe drinking water has led to a rise in waterborne diseases, especially among children and the elderly.
According to them, out of the three taps in the community, two have been out of service for months, leaving just one functioning tap to serve the entire population, which has resulted in long queues, unhygienic conditions, and in many cases, complete lack of access to water for days.
“We are suffering here, students can’t even bath before going to school, some of us are getting rashes and stomach problems because the water we manage to get is not clean,” one distressed resident said.
Health workers in nearby clinics are reportedly seeing an increase in cases of diarrhea, skin infections, and typhoid fever, all linked to the ongoing water situation.
The community’s only alternative water source is a small, animal-shared river, which poses health risks, they added.
The residents are calling on government authorities, the Ghana Water Company, and their MP to intervene immediately and fix the broken water systems before the situation worsens.
