Ashanti Region no longer safe under NDC – COKA laments

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Ashanti Regional Chairman aspirant, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as COKA, has expressed deep concern over what he describes as the deteriorating security situation in the Ashanti Region under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

Speaking in a live interview today on Angel FM Kumasi, COKA stated that the region which has historically been considered one of Ghana’s most stable and politically peaceful areas is witnessing a troubling rise in insecurity, including incidents of armed robbery and violent crime.
“The Ashanti Region is no longer safe under the NDC government since voted into power,” he declared.
“What we are experiencing now is fear, lawlessness, and a breakdown in security enforcement. People are being attacked, businesses are suffering, and the silence from the authorities is deafening.”
COKA did not provide official statistics but cited evidence from residents and community leaders in areas such as Asawase, Denase in the Afigya Kwabre North District, and violent clashes, which have become more frequent in recent months.
“Security should not be politicized. The people of the Ashanti Region deserve to live and work in peace. We cannot allow this rising fear to continue,” he emphasized.
He also urged the regional police command and the Ministry of the Interior to intensify patrols, enforce laws without political bias, and engage local leaders to find community-based solutions to the growing threats.
The Ashanti Region has traditionally been the electoral stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), making COKA’s remarks politically significant.
Local residents who called into the Angel FM program largely echoed COKA’s sentiments, sharing personal stories of insecurity and expressing disappointment in the government’s response so far.
COKA, who served as the long-time Constituency Chairman for Afigya Kwabre South, remains an influential figure within the NPP and is known for his grassroots mobilization and public advocacy. Though he lost the Ashanti Regional Chairmanship race in 2022, his political presence remains strong.
