Paul Afoko welcomes NPP amnesty but questions conditions attached

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko, has welcomed the party’s recent decision to grant a general amnesty to suspended members but has raised concerns over the conditions tied to the gesture.

The Acting National Chairman, Danquah Smith Buttey, in a statement dated August 16, 2025, announced the lifting of all suspensions and the waiving of disciplinary actions against affected members.

However, the directive bars them from contesting any internal party elections for the next two years.

While Mr. Afoko commended the move as a step towards unity, he expressed reservations about the restriction placed on those returning.

“This condition may not sit well with some of the suspended members who still hold deep affection for the party,” he noted.

Asked whether he intends to run for any position, Afoko firmly stated, “No,” adding that though he’s no longer active in politics, he is willing to support the party when called upon.

Paul Afoko was suspended indefinitely as the National Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party in 2015, by the National Executive Committee.

He was accused by party supporters of working against the party’ flagbearer chances of winning the 2016 elections.
