The Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, Hon. Dr. Ayew Afriye, has stated that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia performed better in his first time as presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) than other candidates who later became president in Ghana.
Speaking on OTEC 102.9 FM’s political talk show ‘Dwabrem‘, hosted by Prince Nii Ardey, popularly known as Dr. Cash, on Monday, September 8, 2025, Dr. Afriye noted that Dr. Bawumia’s 41% votes in the 2024 polls are better than the 39% former President Kufuor chalked in his first time as presidential candidate.
According to Dr. Afriyie, Dr. Bawumia has the capacity to win the presidency in 2028.
“There are other first-timers who failed to amass the votes Dr. Bawumia got, but later came back to win the seat, so I believe Dr. Bawumia has the capacity to bounce back and become president in 2028,” he said.
Dr. Afriyie added that Dr. Bawumia has learned his lessons and with the support of all party members, he will win.
He urged NPP members to first endorse Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during the party’s presidential primaries, saying, “One thing we know is that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is better positioned to lead the NPP to power, but the first step is for party delegates to endorse him during primaries.”
He also called on all party members to unite in order to win power in 2028.
