UK doctors clear SDA student shot in eye to start school after successful medical review

Suzzy Pinamang, the Ghanaian senior high school student who survived a tragic shooting incident that left her with a severe eye injury, has successfully undergone a medical review in London between September 10 and 16, 2025, following her surgery in early June.

Pinamang, flown to the UK earlier this year for specialised treatment fully supported by business mogul and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama after a viral video highlighted her grievous injury, returned to the renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital last week for a scheduled follow-up examination.
The medical review confirmed that her recovery is progressing well, with doctors expressing satisfaction at the outcome of the surgery. Specialists at Moorfields reported that the young student has responded positively to treatment, showing significant improvements in her vision and overall healing. They advised her to continue routine check-ups and protective care to ensure long-term recovery.
Importantly, doctors have cleared her to resume schooling, with plans underway to enrol her in a new school, fully supported by the Ibrahim Mahama Global Foundation to aid her continued recovery.
Speaking to the media after the review, Pinamang expressed deep gratitude to her family, the medical team, and Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, who covered all her medical and travel expenses. She also thanked the Ghana High Commission in London for their consistent support throughout her treatment journey.
“This has not been an easy road, but I thank God for life and for the doctors who have given me hope again. I am also thankful to everyone who stood by me, especially Mr. Ibrahim Mahama; he’s truly God-sent, and to everyone who has supported me with prayers and kindness,” she said.
Pinamang also extended her thanks to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and Ambassador-in-situ and Chief of State Protocol, Gustav Kwaku Sefe Dovlo, who were instrumental in facilitating her treatment arrangements in the UK.
Suzzy touched down in the UK on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, accompanied by a caregiver and her brother. She was joined by Rafik Mahama, special aide to Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, who sponsored the entire cost of her travel and medical treatment.
