32-year-old ‘fake’ Police Officer arrested

Ghana Police Service has arrested a 32-year-old man, for posing as a police officer during a public event at the Black Star Square in Accra

According to a post on the Facebook page of the Ghana Police Service, the suspect identified as Akoto Nelson was arrested on Sunday, 19th October 2025, by a team of officers from National Operations Directorate (NOD) Surveillance Unit deployed to provide security at a musical concert.

The Police observed that the suspect dressed in a police uniform with the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) was behaving suspiciously and when interrogated, he admitted that he was not a police officer.

Upon investigations, it was revealed that the suspect had impersonated a police officer to gain free entry to the event, claiming he did not have money to pay the entry fee

He also told the police that the uniform belonged to a deceased Chief Inspector identified as Gyasi, from whom he obtained the police accoutrements in 2022.

A search conducted at Nelson’s residence in Taifa-Ashaiman led to the retrieval of several items which were retained as exhibits.

The items include a toy P99 pistol, a can of pepper spray, two ZTE mini handsets, a pepper spray pouch, a ZTE charger, a Xinfa cutter knife, some complimentary cards, a voter ID bearing the name Akoto Nelson Elikem, and a birth certificate bearing the name Nelson Akoto.

Preliminary investigations also established that the suspect works as a security guard and a messenger at a private company.

“He remains in police custody and will be put before the court” the statement reads.
