Kumasi: Okada riders express mix-feeling amidst delayed legalization of operations

The Okada Riders Union in Kumasi has expressed concern over the government’s delay in passing legislation to legalise their operations, claiming the situation is negatively affecting their livelihoods.

The riders claim that because there are no clear laws, they are frequently harassed by the police and arrested, which deters many from operating freely, particularly in the Kumasi Central Business District.

The proposed legislation, when passed, is expected to regulate commercial motorcycle operations and enforce safety standards across the country.

Speaking to OTEC NEWS Bismark Appiah  Kubi on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of Okada Riders, Nurudeen Isaka, expressed  belief that the legislation will be pass when Parliament reconvene

But, Mr Isaka bemoaned that many riders are losing income due to the continued uncertainty surrounding their work.

He added that despite fulfilling all legal requirements, including possessing valid licences and roadworthy certificates, some police officers still find ways to screw riders.

Some riders also added their voice calling on President John Mahama to fulfill the promise he made to them prior to the 2024 election

Some express dissatisfaction about the maltreatment by police in the region and demand that the Okada be made legal immediately.
