SHS Placements: Improve Existing SHSs rather than building new ones – Dr. Barnabas Addai Amanfo

Renowned Educationist Dr. Barnabas Addai Amanfo has urged the government to prioritize improving existing Senior High Schools (SHSs) rather than constructing new ones.
According to Dr. Amanfo, many existing schools lack infrastructure, leading to underutilization while a few top schools are overcrowded.
“If government was to work on improving the category B and C schools, the country will have enough space for Senior High School students,” Dr. Amanfo emphasized during an interview on Kumasi-based OTEC 102.9 FM’s morning show Nyansapo on Tuesday October 21, 2025 hosted by Kwaku Owusu Boateng aka KOB.
Dr. Amanfo suggested that investing in infrastructure, teaching, and learning materials in rural schools would significantly improve the quality of education.
“All they need to do now is to improve infrastructure, provide teaching and learning materials in these schools at rural areas which have been obviously neglected.”
By upgrading less endowed schools, they will be able to compete with top schools, bridging the gap between them.
This approach, according to Dr. Amanfo, is a more practical solution to addressing the challenges facing Ghana’s SHS education system
