Stop throwing refuse into gutters to save funds for education – Kumasi mayor appeals

The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has made a passionate appeal to residents of the city and Ghanaians at large to desist from the habit of dumping refuse into gutters.
He stressed that such irresponsible practices drain the Assembly’s limited resources which could have been used to improve educational infrastructure and other vital development projects.
Speaking at the Second Ordinary Meeting of the Second Session of the Eighth Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and the 2026 Budget Approval on Monday, October 27, 2025, the Mayor expressed concern over the persistent issue of poor sanitation in Kumasi.
He noted that despite ongoing interventions, many residents continue to dispose of waste indiscriminately, especially during rainfall, leading to choked drains, flooding, and health hazards.
Hon. Ofori Agyemang, also known as King Zuba, revealed that the Assembly spends millions of cedis each year to evacuate refuse and desilt drains.
He cited a recent operation at Asokwa, where the KMA spent GHC230, 000 to remove piled-up waste in just three days.
He lamented that such funds could have been used to improve classroom and dormitory facilities in senior high schools across the metropolis.
The Mayor described the situation as worrying and called for a shift in attitude among residents.
He emphasized that the development of the city was being hindered by actions that are entirely preventable.
“We could achieve more if residents stopped dumping refuse into gutters and supported the Assembly’s efforts,” he said.
Hon. Ofori Agyemang Boadi also issued a stern warning that the Assembly would not hesitate to take punitive measures against individuals who flout sanitation bye-laws.
He stated that enforcement teams would be deployed to ensure compliance and maintain cleanliness in the city.
He concluded by reminding residents that keeping Kumasi clean is a shared responsibility.
“It is not only the duty of the Assembly, but every citizen who wants to see Kumasi become a clean, safe, and modern city must play their part,” the Mayor affirmed.
