The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak Mohamed, has disclosed that military officers deployed to protect lives during the 2024 polls in Mankranso, Ashanti Region, used unacceptable crowd control methods, resulting in the death of one person.

According to the Minister, investigations revealed that the late Dominic Nimo died from a shot fired by soldiers, and four others were injured in the same manner.

“There was no doubt after the investigation that the late Dominic Nimo died by the shot fired by the soldiers, similarly, the four who got injured was through the same process,” the Minister stated during a press briefing on investigations into the 2020 and 2024 election violence.

The Minister explained that while the soldiers were protecting the polling station from a mob attack, the methods used were not acceptable.

Eleven soldiers have been identified and questioned, with eight admitting to firing warning shots, but denying shooting into the crowd.

“However, evidence points to the fact that the deceased and the injured were all hit by bullets from the military at post,” the Minister emphasized.

The committee has recommended compensation for the deceased’s family and the injured.
