A/R: Residents of Bompata vow to resist planned mining activities over environmental concerns

Residents of Bompata in the Asante Akyem South Municipality of the Ashanti Region have declared their unwavering opposition to plans by a private company to begin mining activities in their area.

The concerned residents expressed grave concern over what they described as a looming environmental and social disaster should mining is permitted to proceed.

They maintained that their lands, water bodies, and livelihoods are at risk, vowing to resist any attempt to introduce mining activities within the Bompata Traditional Area.

The residents said some local individuals are collaborating with a mining company in Accra to acquire concession rights to mine in the area.

Without specifically mentioning any company, the residents are sending warning to any individual or company to abort any plans of coming to area to do mining, either legal or illegal.

The residents stated categorically that they completely reject any plans, emphasizing that they would not allow their ancestral lands to suffer the same fate as other mining communities across Ghana that have been left with polluted rivers, destroyed farmlands, and displaced populations.

Speaking during a press conference on Sunday, November 2, 2025, Mr. Joseph Baah, convener for the aggrieved residents, urged Bompata Traditional Council to act swiftly to prevent what he described as an impending tragedy.

He warned that mining would bring more harm than good, leading to the destruction of the environment, the rise of social vices, and the collapse of the area’s agricultural economy.

“Our lands are the backbone of our survival. We farm, we fetch water from our rivers, and we live in peace with nature. Mining will destroy everything our forefathers left us. We are determined to protect our land for the generations yet unborn,” Mr. Baah stressed.

Furthermore, some of the residents of Asante Akyem Bompata also demanded that all prospective mining companies immediately withdraw any plans or preparations toward mining in the Bompata area.

They also made passionate appealed to the President John Dramani Mahama and Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to come to intervene to avert any disaster.

They appealed to the Asante Akyem South Municipal Assembly, the Environmental Protection Agency, the District Health Directorate, and the Directorate of Agriculture to reject or suspend any permits for mining in the area.
