Parliamentary proceedings descended into chaos as the Majority and Minority clashed over the Speaker’s order for the continuation of the day’s business.
The disruption occurred when Minority MPs insisted that the House be adjourned after Speaker Alban Bagbin deferred the ruling on the Kpandai seat vacancy.
Earlier, the Minority blocked Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga from responding to calls for the withdrawal of a letter from the Clerk of Parliament declaring the seat vacant. The letter, dated December 4, 2025, was sent to Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa following a High Court ruling ordering a rerun of the Kpandai election.
Minority MPs, dressed in black, chanted patriotic songs, banged tables, and hooted at the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, who tried to maintain order. Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh described the letter as “out of place” and “unfortunate,” arguing that it violated the rule of law and should be withdrawn.
The confrontation escalated as Minority members repeatedly obstructed Mahama Ayariga whenever he attempted to speak. Speaker Alban Bagbin was forced to suspend proceedings temporarily, urging MPs to respect standing orders. He indicated that the matter would be resolved after hearing from the leaders of the house.
