GNFS to begin nationwide vehicle fire extinguisher compliance exercise on December 18

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has announced the commencement of a nationwide fire extinguisher compliance exercise, scheduled to begin on Thursday, December 18, 2025.

The initiative seeks to ensure that every vehicle operating on Ghana’s roads is fitted with a functional, easily accessible, and GNFS-certified portable fire extinguisher.
The move forms part of the Service’s broader efforts to improve fire safety awareness and reduce fire-related accidents across the country.
According to a press release issued on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, and signed by the Head of Public Relations of the GNFS, Divisional Officer II Desmond E. Ackah, the operation will be led by the GNFS Fire Safety Compliance Taskforce.
The nationwide campaign will be conducted in close collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.
Together, the agencies aim to enforce existing safety regulations while promoting a culture of preventive fire safety among road users.
The Compliance Taskforce will conduct random on-the-spot inspections on both private and commercial vehicles to verify the presence and functionality of fire extinguishers.
Vehicles found to be compliant will be issued certification tags, while drivers without approved extinguishers will receive on-the-spot guidance on obtaining and properly installing them.
The team will also provide technical advice on the correct use and maintenance of fire extinguishers.
In addition to enforcement, the GNFS intends to embark on a public education campaign targeting transport unions, drivers, and vehicle owners.
The campaign will emphasize the importance of keeping extinguishers serviceable, securely mounted, and within easy reach.
It will also encourage drivers to carry other essential safety tools, such as reflective warning triangles and first-aid kits, as part of comprehensive vehicle safety preparedness.
The GNFS believes that the exercise will not only boost compliance with fire safety regulations but also contribute significantly to reducing fire-related incidents on the nation’s roads.
“This initiative is ultimately about saving lives and protecting property,” the statement added, underscoring the Service’s commitment to ensuring that every motorist plays an active role in enhancing road and fire safety across Ghana.
