GNFS urges communities to demand fire stations alongside other social amenities

The Ghana National Fire Service has called on communities across the country to place the construction of fire stations high on the list of social amenities they demand from the government, describing fire safety as essential to community development.

The service said fire stations are just as crucial as schools, hospitals, markets, and police posts in ensuring the safety and development of communities.

According to the GNFS, while communities often lobby for visible infrastructure such as classrooms and health facilities, the absence of nearby fire stations continues to expose lives and property to avoidable risks.

The Service stressed that a fire station within reach can significantly reduce response times during emergencies.

The Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, DOII Peter Addai, made the remarks during an interview on Otec FM’s morning show hosted by Kwaku Owusu Boateng on Wednesday, December 17, 2025.

D.O. II Peter Addai explained that the Service’s mandate goes beyond extinguishing fires.

“We respond to fire outbreaks, road traffic accidents, floods, and other emergencies that affect the safety and development of our communities,” he said.

D.O. II Addai noted that the core responsibilities of the GNFS include rescue operations, fire prevention and education, emergency preparedness, and the protection of lives and property.

“When you sum up all these roles, it is about safeguarding lives and protecting property, which is fundamental to national development,” he stated.

D.O. II Addai therefore advocated the establishment of fire stations in every community, describing them as a source of comfort and reassurance for residents.

“There is a need for fire stations in all communities to serve as a source of solace in times of emergency,” he added, urging community leaders to make fire safety a collective priority.
