Bawumia not to blame for NPP’s poor performance in Upper East in 2024 polls – Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

Former Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has defended Dr Bawumia against accusations that he is responsible for the NPP’s low votes in the Upper East Region.

Speaking on OTEC FM’s afternoon programme Dwabrem, hosted by Prince Nii Ardey, popularly known as Dr Cash, on Wednesday, January 29, 2026  Hon Mensah-Bonsu emphasized that blaming Dr Bawumia for the party’s failure to win seats in Bawku is baseless.

He noted that the Bawku area has historically been a challenging zone for the NPP, and the party has always struggled to win votes there.

“The Upper East Region, particularly Bawku and its environs, have never been NPP’s stronghold. Both former presidents Kuffour and Akufo-Addo failed to improve the party’s performance,” he said.

Hon Osei Kyei argued that the party’s failure to win votes in the 2024 polls has nothing to do with candidate Bawumia.

“President Kuffour in 2004 lost seats under Akufo-Addo; NPP won no seats there. So if you look at the history, the party itself has always struggled to win votes, so blaming Dr Bawumia is all wrong,” he added.

He touted Dr Bawumia as the best candidate for the party, urging delegates to vote for him as the party’s flagbearer.
