Kumasi mayor orders the closure of Alpha and Omega chop bar over unsanitary circumstances

The mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Richard Ofori Agyemang-Boadi, has ordered the immediate closure of Alpha and Omega Chop Bar, a well-known restaurant in the Krobo-Odumase (K.O) sector of Kumasi’s Central Business District due to unsanitary circumstances.

The order came after the Mayor conducted an inspection tour and found a strong, foul stink coming from an overflowing sewer that had spilled into the main road, endangering the health of local commuters and traders in the area

After more investigation, it was discovered that the overflow was caused by the food joint’s garbage being dumped into the drainage system.

The situation was further compounded by the operations of a public toilet facility located directly behind the food joint.

The Mayor directed that the operators of the toilet facility be summoned to court for  operating with fake documentation and without a septic tank, instead discharging waste directly into the drain.

More than 10 other shops whose activities were found to be contributing to the poor sanitary conditions have also been summoned to court.

Mr. Ofori Agyemang-Boadi expressed disappointment over the situation and warned food and sanitation facility operators to properly follow environmental and public health standards or risk penalties.

“We are summoning all of them to court for the law to deal with them,” the Mayor said.
