“Death Trap”: NPP Spokesperson Blames Mahama for Rising Fatalities on Accra–Kumasi Highway

Yaw Opoku Mensah, Spokesperson for Dr Adutwum and NPP Communications Team Member

Yaw Opoku Mensah, a member of the NPP Communications Team and spokesperson for Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has leveled a scathing critique against President John Dramani Mahama.

He attributes the increasing number of fatalities on the Accra–Kumasi highway to the President’s perceived neglect, labeling the vital corridor a “death trap.”

Failure of Governance and Safety:

Mr. Opoku Mensah asserted that the President must be held accountable for failing to prioritize road safety, a mandate that necessitates the completion of robust infrastructure to protect lives and property.

He specifically pointed to the abandonment of critical bypasses as a primary cause of the current danger.

“The numerous bypasses initiated under the previous administration have been neglected by this government, turning the Accra–Kumasi journey into a daily gamble with death,” Mensah stated.

He added provocatively, “If the President cannot see the urgency in completing these projects, it suggests an indifference to the lives being lost every day.”

Alarming Toll:

Backing his claims with data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Mr. Opoku Mensah highlighted the escalating crisis:

2025 Statistics:

2,949 fatalities and over 14,700 crashes nationwide.

Current Trends:

Provisional data for early 2026 indicates that the Accra–Kumasi stretch remains a disproportionate contributor to these figures.

Nature of Incidents:

Thousands more have suffered life-altering injuries in accidents that Mensah argues are “preventable tragedies” rather than unavoidable accidents.

Call for Continuity and Accountability:

The spokesperson emphasized that governance should be a continuous process, arguing that the current administration has a moral and functional obligation to finish inherited projects before launching new ones.

“Every life lost on that stretch is a burden on the government’s conscience. Completing these bypasses would save countless lives. It is unacceptable to treat these deaths as a normal occurrence when the solutions are within reach,” he remarked.

Conclusion

Mr. Opoku Mensah concluded by urging civil society and the general public to demand immediate action.

He stressed that while road safety is a shared responsibility, the government holds the ultimate power to end the “ongoing carnage” by prioritizing the completion of stalled infrastructure.
