Man, 50, arrested for alleged defilement, forced abortion in Tamale

A 50-year-old man has been arrested by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Northern Regional Police Command for allegedly impregnating a 14-year-old primary school pupil at Nyanshegu, a suburb of Tamale.
The suspect, identified as Mohammed, is further alleged to have taken the girl to a private health facility where the pregnancy was terminated without the consent of her parents.
He has been arraigned before the Tamale Magistrate Court 1, presided over by His Worship Stephen Tabiri, and remanded into custody.
The accused faces charges of defilement and causing abortion and is expected to reappear in court on March 4, 2026.
Speaking with Channel One News, the girl’s father, Mohammed Salifu, said that the family is determined to pursue justice.
He disclosed that some community chiefs and opinion leaders had approached them in an attempt to persuade the family to settle the matter out of court, but they declined.
“Two chiefs and some opinion leaders in our community came to our house to plead with us to withdraw the case, but we refused and insisted that we want justice for my daughter,” he said.
Sources indicate that both the family and other individuals connected to the case have allegedly received threats from persons believed to be linked to the accused.
