Parliament approves GH¢2.9bn for Ghana Medical Trust Fund

Parliament has approved an amount of GH¢2.9 billion for the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Care, marking a major milestone in government’s efforts to improve access to specialised healthcare in the country.

The approval followed the passage of the relevant financial allocation after the House considered the necessary policy and funding arrangements, acknowledging the increasing burden of chronic non-communicable diseases on households and the national healthcare system.

The Fund is aimed at providing financial support for the treatment and management of conditions such as cancer, kidney failure, and other long-term illnesses that often impose heavy costs on patients and their families.

Members of Parliament described the initiative as timely and essential, noting that it would help reduce out-of-pocket expenses while promoting equity in access to specialised medical services.

In addition, the Fund is expected to support selected health facilities across the country to enhance their capacity to deliver advanced medical care.

With parliamentary approval now secured, implementation of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund is expected to move into full gear in the coming months.

Government has assured the public that the resources will be deployed transparently and efficiently to ensure that Mahama Care delivers meaningful relief to vulnerable patients and strengthens Ghana’s healthcare system.
