Supreme Court @150: “Dispense justice without fear or favour” — GBA President to legal practitioners

The President of the Ghana Bar Association, Efua Ghartey, has called on lawyers and judges to exercise their authority with humility and fairness, stressing that the legal profession must remain anchored in integrity and public trust.

Speaking at the Supreme Court at 150 celebration held at the University of Ghana on Thursday, April 16, 2026, Ghartey described the legal profession as occupying a “hallowed position” that comes with immense responsibility.

“We find ourselves in a hallowed position; a position of immense power and influence. May we be humbled by this and dispense justice to all men and women without fear or ill will,” she said.

The event, themed “Honouring the past, celebrating the present and defining the future,” brought together members of the bench, bar, and academia to reflect on the evolution and future direction of Ghana’s justice system.

Ghartey emphasised that while the legal profession confers privilege, it also demands accountability and ethical conduct from practitioners.

She urged members of the Bar to uphold the principles of justice, equality before the law, and impartiality in their work, noting that public confidence in the judiciary depends largely on how legal actors conduct themselves.

“The credibility of the justice system rests on our shoulders,” she said, adding that lawyers and judges must ensure justice is delivered “without fear or favour.”

Her remarks come amid ongoing conversations about judicial accountability and the role of legal professionals in strengthening democratic governance in Ghana.
