Morocco eliminate Netherlands on penalties to reach FIFA World Cup Round of 16

Morocco are through to the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after defeating the Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shootout following a pulsating 1-1 draw at Monterrey Stadium.

The Atlas Lions displayed remarkable resilience to recover from a second-half deficit before goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero in the shootout, sending Morocco into the last 16 where they will face co-hosts Canada on July 4 in Houston.

The Netherlands controlled much of the opening stages, but Morocco created the first clear opportunity when Neil El Aynaoui powered a header towards goal from Achraf Hakimi’s corner, only for Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to produce a brilliant reflex save.

Morocco continued to threaten before the interval, with Hakimi delivering a dangerous cross that narrowly evaded Ismael Saibari at the back post.

Hakimi remained Morocco’s biggest attacking outlet after the break, striking the post with a powerful effort before creating another promising opening that was snuffed out by a superb recovery tackle from Micky van de Ven.

Dutch coach Ronald Koeman introduced Wout Weghorst and Teun Koopmeiners in search of greater attacking momentum, and the substitutions paid off. Weghorst won an aerial duel to release Crysencio Summerville, who slipped Cody Gakpo through on goal. Gakpo calmly finished past Bounou to give the Netherlands the lead in an emotionally charged match, coming just two days after revealing the heartbreaking loss of his unborn son.

Just when the Oranje appeared destined for victory, Morocco struck back. Substitute Issa Diop rose highest to head home Chemsdine Talbi’s inviting cross, forcing the contest into extra time.

Both sides pushed for a winner, with Verbruggen producing an outstanding point-blank save to deny Soufiane Rahimi and keep Dutch hopes alive.

The match was ultimately decided from the penalty spot. After both teams missed twice, Bounou produced the decisive save to deny Summerville before Saibari confidently converted Morocco’s winning penalty, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Atlas Lions.

Morocco’s victory keeps Africa’s impressive FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign alive and sets up a mouth-watering Round of 16 showdown against Canada.
